yes

@atomicpoet calckey looks nice but I've never used it, mastodon too.

Pleroma looks old which is not necessarily bad but I don't like it.

I don't seem to like pixelfed too much but I'm not sure why. It doesn't look bad or anything, but I guess just don't find it appealing?

Electron apps dumping cache in ~/.config like what the fuck do you think ~/.cache is all about? Fucking dipshits
Nothing like a cup of coffee and deploying to production on a Friday to really wake you up

@amolith I currently have set up an xmpp and matrix instance since I'm testing them to use with my friends.

Is there any reason for throwing away matrix? as I understand there are concerns because of the metadata

But on the other hand, I couldn't get an XMPP client that was good looking (although element is kinda ugly in its own way) and the messages cannot be decrypted if your session is newer than the history. If you happen to know a way to decrypt them that would be awesome

@norm I just moved an entire project workflow to docker and I'd rather not use it for the development stage.

I might also be too dumb to set it up properly but it's just not comfortable and I feel it slowed me down a lot

Now for staging or production deployment, it is pretty good, pretty comfy and it just runs. I can leave it and it will bring itself up so it's nice

@tek_dmn @[email protected] @[email protected] @hfaust No no, I wasn't arguing against your comment, I genuinely didn't understand it 😅.

I didn't have to do much setup for XMPP as I used snikket which is basically a single docker command solution that comes with everything. I just changed the config to use the same TURN server for both matrix and XMPP

@tek_dmn @[email protected] @[email protected] @hfaust What do you mean by seamless E2EE?

In a way both worked, Element asked me to verify my session and decrypted my old messages. While all the XMPP clients I tried also worked but I couldn't see my past messages send on other clients/devices with no clear way to decrypt them

@[email protected] @[email protected] @hfaust honest question, What client you guys recommend for xmpp?

Just started hosting my own to try it out and I can't get over the clients. Don't get me wrong, element really has a lot of issues but God, xmpp clients are just plain ugly lol

In comparison most clients for matrix have way better UI with some issues I can live with

You can argue that is personal preference all you want, whatever

@atomicpoet Yes, context matters in those cases but overall, I think everyone should do at least a bit of research on any topic that's important for them and never blindly follow any advice.

Another point I wanted to bring out with this whole point was that it is also quite hard to get accurate information if you don't know how to properly look for it. There's too much noise and we get trapped into like minded groups by every single search engine and social media these days.
