🌓 When Big Meteors Strike the Moon, they Create Instant Lava Flows 🌗

Space rocks hammer the Moon at speeds faster than 12 km/s. Kinetic energy is converted into heat, melting rock into lava. It sprays onto crater walls and the surrounding area, then flows downhill like volcanic eruptions on Earth, spreading out across the surface of the Moon. In one impact, the lava flowed for 18 kilometers, measuring over 50 meters thick at some points.

@AnnFinkbeiner They're amazing, and cross overhead twice a year, once going north and then south again for winter. There can be hundreds flying in huge "Vs", and you hear them over the horizon before you actually see them.
@doug_ellison It lasted so much longer than the original mission plan. Apart from the mole, it was wildly successful.
@kevinmgill One of the best, I hear.
@ClaireLamman You'd think the EHT would have seen the paw coming out at M87 too. I guess we can hope that a more powerful observatory will be able to catch that.

@ZachWeinersmith I focus my energy on the distribution platforms I control: website, email, RSS, podcast, Patreon. Everything else is a distraction and time gobbler.

I try to interview every new patron I get and ask them how they found me. I've done 1000 interviews and NOBODY has ever said they found me on Facebook or Twitter.

Spend time on these platforms if you enjoy your time on them, but don't use them for marketing.

@spaceflight Oh interesting, I'd heard that it still might be usable. That changes things.
@seanmcarroll I've got a link to universetoday.com and my Mastodon account in my bio. They unlinked the Mastodon one. This is impressively short-sighted.
@ZachWeinersmith I was wondering when you'd find your way over here...
@luckytran I can't believe he said that. Poor Dr. Fauci, and epidemiologists in general. The scorn of expertise is heartbreaking.
