Off cuff prediction:

Tomorrow a few more #Republicans will switch from #KevinMcCarthy to "present," lowering the count needed to win #SpeakeroftheHouse.

Once it looks like #HakeemJeffries can win with 212 votes, will see movement among the 20 Rep defectors. Some will switch to McCarthy.

However, most will hold fast or vote present. Their brand and fundraising capacity are based on obstructionism and complaining about Dems, not on governing.

Jeffries as first Black SoH, but set up to fail.

Spending my run up to the New Year frantically knocking things off my to do list that I had on my "Accomplish in 2022" agenda... Anyone else doing the same?

The US learned nothing about country based travel bans since I first criticized them back in 2020. They were racist and ineffective when Fauci approved of them under Trump, and they were racist and ineffective when Fauci approved of them under Biden.

We banned flights from China, but allowed them from Italy, and NYC got crushed.🤡

With Omicron, we banned flights from African countries with zero Omicron cases!🤦🏿‍♂️ But allowed flights from EU countries that were spiking.🤡

Troubling and brutal financial woes at the Met #Opera as it withdraws $30 million from its endowment to cover #pandemic losses and cuts number of performances next season. “The prospect of a recession next year is further rattling #arts groups and raising fears that weak attendance could extend into next season and beyond. Federal assistance, which helped many companies survive the pandemic shutdown, has now largely dried up.” https://www.nytimes.com/2022/12/26/arts/music/metropolitan-opera-endowment-contemporary.html
Pandemic Woes Lead Met Opera to Tap Endowment and Embrace New Work

Facing tepid ticket sales, the company will withdraw up to $30 million from its endowment and stage more operas by living composers, which have been outselling the classics.

A warning to parents traveling on Southwest Air:

Yesterday, my sister checked 3 carseats for her flight. Southwest canceled their flight twice and rebooked them for Wednesday. My sister asked for the carseats back so they could leave, and Southwest refused. 24hrs later, same thing.

Apparently this is Southwest policy - once you check a bag, they won't give it back, even if your flight is canceled and rebooked for another day.

You’ve already heard that Elsevier is evil. That they know this much about you — and that they are selling this data not just to our institutions but to god-knows-who-else — is cause for real, material protest. They may not have a crass loud mouthed billionaire spokesbaby but they’re so, so much worse. Open source, open access alternatives exist. Get them as far out of your life as possible. https://eiko-fried.com/welcome-to-hotel-elsevier-you-can-check-out-any-time-you-like-not/
Welcome to Hotel Elsevier: you can check-out any time you like … not » Eiko Fried

A journey by Robin Kok and Eiko Fried trying to understand what private data Elsevier collects; what private data Elsevier sells; and what to do about it.

Could someone more experienced please explain to us newbies the best way to incorporate gifs into our posts? I want to make sure my posting is #accessible but also want to be mindful that I’m using the correct infrastructure to communicate my points.

Also if a woman points out that you've questioned her expertise, without even mentioning gender, and your response is "can we not make this about women in stem" then I'm guessing that (a) she's not the first woman who's made that observation to you; and (b) maybe you should realize that EVEN IF it really does have nothing to do with gender, the fact that her expertise is CONSTANTLY being questioned might make her more sensitive to it than a man would be. Ugh.

Someone at the airport has attached jingle bells to their child and now the child is roaming free and everything is exactly as awful as it sounds.
