You never know what people are going through or how much time we have left. Please be kind and patient with each other.

Last Wednesday evening @nova had a climbing accident and died.

All of us that loved her are heart broken and stunned. She was an amazing person that lived out loud and built connection and community wherever she went. She will be horribly missed.

Twitter launches encrypted DMs behind a paywall

In a new support document, Twitter has detailed what you can expect from the first version of the platform’s encrypted direct messages. To be able to send and receive encrypted DMs, you’ll have to pay Twitter for the ability to do so.

according to a bluesky employee, resolveHandle is intentional. this can't be good

https://github.com/bluesky-social/atproto/issues/979#issuecomment-1538098166

resolveExternalHandle supports any domain allowing file access · Issue #979 · bluesky-social/atproto

there's a user on bsky.social who has a handle of @s3.amazonaws.com because they were able to upload a file acting as an xRPC agent(?) using the resolveHandle endpoint. I believe I've grasped why t...

I know that rust-qt exists but it lacks some svg stuff
does anyone know the best way to work with qt in rust
like if they said "welcome to join elsewhere in the federation when it exists" I mean they're not wrong, but there is nowhere for banned accounts to go. if bsky.social was a separate instance but you could create a federated one then, okay, but you literally can't 💀

bluesky CEO Jay Graber just said any banned accounts are "welcome to join elsewhere in the federation and perhaps reconnect with us after we exit beta". https://www.theverge.com/2023/5/2/23708385/bluesky-weather-report-moderation-app-store

what I take away from this is that bluesky believes it is a federation but knows that bsky.social isn't. the problem is that bluesky is not a federation. it lacks that ability and it should not be calling it one. when you create a "pds" it's more like creating your own twitter/glorified postgres db

Everything happening on Bluesky, Twitter’s most chaotic successor

The invite-only, Jack Dorsey-backed social network Bluesky had a surge of interest and new users last week. But between the appearance of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, harassment scandals, and platform errors, a new community is finding its footing.

Mastodon is making it easier to create an account

Mastodon has rolled out an updated onboarding process that should make it easier for newcomers to sign up for the decentralized network without having to choose from thousands of instances.

at some point in the future I would like to create a "better bluesky" but that's literally just mastodon 💀 it's futile to put work into something that's already been done. the concept is fine but until bsky.social gets federation I won't touch it. it prob will, it's prob just because it's invite only rn.
