another fun story about cardiac weirdness!
i’ve been titrating back on amphetamine for adhd treatment recently. my dose is now at 17.5mg of MAS IR (Adderall generic).
this even occurred yesterday, about T+2hr after my morning dose. i’d been doing light physical activity: crouching, picking up <= 10 lbs at a time, standing, bending over, reaching overhead. i’d been doing that for maybe 30 minutes to an hour.
i was finished, and stood up finally. i noticed that i’d worked up a bit of a sweat, but nothing major. it wasn’t pouring off my face, and my breathing wasn’t labored. in fact, i was breathing normally.
but i also noticed that my pulse seemed high. this wasn’t accompanied by palpitations. i was barely aware of the fact it was elevated, even. it did feel like i was maybe slightly overstimulated with some jitters, but i wasn’t dizzy.
i went to brush my teeth, and in the stillness of the moment, i further noticed my pulse was rather high. after i finished, i took some measurements and was utterly shocked at what they came out to!
the consumer-grade pulse oximeter said 210 BPM heart rate. that’s pretty much maximum cardiac output! i double checked with a finger to my neck and confirmed that my heart was racing at least 3 beats per second
check out the video below for that initial reading in the moment and some incredulous self-dialogue!
i then finished my oral hygiene routine, thinking this was so absurd, and after, i took blood pressure readings. i sat for this, and elevated my arm over my heart. the one attached shows 124/103, which is stage 2 hypertension! (i did measure again, 5 minutes later, and there was no change.)
it took about 15 minutes of sitting for all of this to return to normal, but it did. the event was transient… i’ve experienced elevated BP stats and heart rate when titrating amphetamine initially in 2020, but they weren’t anywhere near this concerning!
i don’t think there’s really anything to do about this. i chalk it up to very poor sleep the night before increasing cardiac strain in combination with the raised stimulant dose. probably if i were older, this would’ve put me at significant risk of a heart attack, though!
i’ll be monitoring for now. i don’t think there’s any point in telling a doctor. maybe i will if it happens again, but i worry that they’ll decide i should go off amphetamine, and i just don’t think that’s warranted nor good for my mental health! i suspect that once i stabilize on a dose, this will stop happening.
