My grandfather fought in the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force in WWI. He enlisted in Jan 1917.
During his deployment, he had 1918 flu, bronchitis, boils, ulcerated tonsils, jaundice & like 100s of 1000s of WWI soldiers, contracted syphilis. Treatment for that VD was arsenic -- there were no antibiotics, yet. He was at notorious Étaples camp, then the UK, met my grandmother, my namesake.
Disease was as much an enemy as Germans.
