So, somewhat weirdly, Fedora / Gnome on Asahi Linux is significantly more responsive on my MBP M1 13" than it is on my MBP M1 Pro 14".
Both are far better than running in MacOS though and with the latest EVDI patch, DisplayLink is rock solid, both in connectivity and 4K output, which means I'm not waiting for the DP over USB-C capability to be moved into release.
Apple has launched the MacBook Neo at a very un-Apple price point and it offers amazing value there. Certainly no Windows laptop or Chromebook is able to directly compete. This will undoubtedly be the number one choice for students this coming school year.
As much as Apple's behaviour in the political space has been reprehensible - giving up its principles to protect its profits; and its latest MacOS release is junky, this still seems like a good option for the average computer buyer

Had #AsahiLinux on my M1 MBP for a month & I have to say it's amazing. Installation is simple & quick . In use it makes MacOS feel slow, clunky, & somewhat restrictive.
Compromises: No TouchID, & using a DisplayLink dongle USB-C display support aarives.
Keeping my Mac for FCP only, and once I've found / learnt a suitable Linux video editor, that will go too.
