From back when I used to bake cookies, in the early days of Instagram: An adorable accident.
Note the chin crumb for extra cuteness.
#pareidoliaNoodling around my favorite city #🩷mpls
This is one of the very first photos I posted on Instagram, in April 2012, when my workplace shared a building with the scrappy startup. I joined Instagram one day before they were bought by FB. I remember when they threw their acquisition party, and I remember it feeling very bitter sweet, but I don't remember how much of that was projection.
On the day I took this photo, I was on my first bike ride after reaching a milestone on what was going to turn out to be a much much longer recovery after being injured in a car crash in 2011. I remember the feeling of pure freedom that taking this first ride brought me, though.
This bike remains my favorite of all time. It's the second bike I built myself. I nearly lost the bike when I was hit by a car a few weeks later. And then I lost the bike for good when I was hit by a car in 2019.
Despite the struggle to keep my body functioning in our car-dominated cities, this feels like it was a simpler time. A sunnier time. Definitely a more youthful time. But this is a good reminder to make sure I keep getting out on rides, and to keep the faith that I still yet might build a bike as sweet as this one was.
