the end of gameplay followed directly from my #droqever experiments, btw. if you played and liked those, the end of gameplay has the peculiar shape of "a bunch of droqevers glued together". i don't know how i'd describe it to a normal person but if that means something to you then congrats.
i think it's the first time i've ever felt like i made something that was "more than the sum of its parts".
i should link my little rant, that will help explain some things, sort of, about "kill gameplay", and then i am going to watch an episode of white lotus (season 2) (we are re-watching it after finishing season 3) and go to bed. i don't really post on mastodon very much, but i figured i better, so this is what you get for following me on mastodon...
uh...
anyway, without further ado, my "kill gameplay" rant, good night
properly credited, the name The End of Gameplay must certainly have been inspired by @shadsy 's momentous "It is Easier to Imagine the End of Gameplay than the End of Video Games": https://shadsy.itch.io/post-gameplay
it lodged itself in my brain, i suppose, emerging when it was warm enough, emerging when ready.
it's been funny making a game this way, after so long, but i think killing gameplay set me free to create something so much more deeply resonant? without gameplay watering it down. it's DENSE!!!
and the whole time i was making a game about it by accident too? i was just... putting pieces together. piece after piece after piece after piece.
here, if you haven't already clicked onthe steam linke, there's a video, i made a trailer, you can see what it looks like. also there's my face!!! check out my face.
alright let me dial it back. the game is fine. it's fine. it's a game, it has gameplay, i love it but it's pretty grounded, i guess. it is something. it has a shape.
i started yelling and screaming on bluesky "kill gameplay" "kill gameplay" "kill gameplay" until people asked me what i meant. it seems like this phrase has some kind of magic power not only over me (to make the right kind of games) but also over other game devs (to make them ask wtf i'm talking about)
hello how in the world can i make this announcement properly. uh i'm making a videogame. the best one i've ever made. its sheer beauty makes me weep when i regard it. (i am literally not kidding.) i'm going to give a little backstory first, but it's done, it's finished, i'm releasing it in a little under a month now. please await the flower moon, upon whose full face i shall release "The End of Gameplay."
