So, thanks to Elon, we are again discussing the sense and nonsense of #rewrites.

My take on this: It’s usually a understandable but misguided reaction to a legacy codebase.

A complete from scratch rewrites risk ending up in an in-between state in which you have to maintain the new system but also cannot switch off the old one. A situation that is arguably worse than the situation you started from.

Estimation exercises that require the team to come around a table and discuss whether a task is a three or a five are a typical component of today’s software development rituals. Do the benefits of this process outweigh its cost?
