Just saw an article calling the Epstein scandal ā€œTrump’s Watergate.ā€ My good siblings, we must stop using Watergate as a metric for Trump’s misdeeds. Watergate is so minor in comparison to Trump’s criminality and foolishness that there’s no comparison at all. Call it what it is: Trump’s pedophilia cover-up. Trump’s sprint toward fascism. Trump’s venality, greed, treason, and utter incompetence. Every aspect is monumental, far beyond a little light inter-party espionage. I guess Watergate is referred to because we weren’t *quite* the frogs in the water back then and Nixon’s bad behavior seemed extreme, but this goes much, much further.
I was hitting it off with my new IT guy until I mentioned something about why I hadn't had access to my desktop folder for like two years. I said, "Well, yknow, tragedy plus time equals comedy... so... ." And he took it as an invitation to celebrate that we, as white guys in our late 30s, were blessed to grow up with offensive comedy. No, shut up, shut your mouth, we were so close to being friends you fucking knob.
Besties just chilling
I am old enough that almost every sensation I experience, every emotion evoked thereby is a complicated negotiation between stimulus and history. But there are still some moments that land with the corrosive one-note simplicity you’d expect from a mouthful of kerosene, and one of them is when I’m told I need to download an app, create an account and hand over my personal information to complete a transaction that used to involve putting a coin in a coin slot.

@cwebber Caveat that had a different party won the federal election, the situation would look very different. We are only ever an election away from having our rights stripped away from us.

On the provincial level, several provinces are growing very trans-hostile, and since healthcare, education, drivers' licences, etc., are provincial affairs, it has the potential to significantly impact trans people's lives.

So while we might be better than parts of the US, and we may get better for certain asylum-seekers, we have the same sorts of problems and there is no guarantee things will be better here forever.

Canadian citizenship is a great option and everyone who can should take advantage of it! But for most, simply moving to a more progressive state is still going to be easier and cheaper than trying to get into Canada.

In light of the TTC's POO Patrols - for real, our governance at its finest: https://www.thestar.com/news/gta/no-laughing-matter-ttcs-fiery-response-to-online-posts-poking-fun-at-acronym-for-provincial/article_93d08cba-a9a1-4c42-87e3-7d5e0e25dd6d.html - I ask that we treat parking violations as seriously as we treat fare violations.

Evading a $3.25 fare results in a fine of $425: a factor of about 130x. If we applied the same logic to the daily maximum rates for parking, the cost of a parking ticket in the Distillery District would be $4550, with the added benefit that the people incurring that price demonstrably have an asset worth that much.

ā€˜No laughing matter’: TTC’s fiery response to online posts poking fun at acronym for Provincial Offences Officers

Social media denizens are begging the TTC to rework the ā€œPOOā€ acronym. But the commission says the matter’s out of its hands.

In an astonishing photo series, Dennis Lehtonen documents a pair of immense icebergs paying a visit to a small Greenland village.

Anyway here's superman from 75 years ago, being woke a f
@TSindelar well, I guess the message was misunterstood

@TSindelar we agree with and support the point you're making

but we have also seen an entire book compiling the deeply racist Superman PSAs by the same artists and authors, during the war. amazing how fast that tone changed after it ended.

it's important to keep in mind that when PSAs are in the mouth of a popular character, it's really the existing power structures of society talking to us, and those power structures don't really have beliefs as such. they'll turn on a dime.

@ireneista im not familiar with these!
@TSindelar https://www.comicsdetective.com/2020/08/superman-and-the-american-way-1943/ is a good run-down, and far more thorough than anything we could have put together on our own
Superman and the American Way: 1943 – The Comics Detective

@TSindelar the slogan shown on the cover of Action Comics #58 there was also printed, in a smaller version, on the covers of numerous subsequent comics. we first became aware of the whole thing from a book compiling all the issue covers - it was really dramatic seeing it repeated over and over like that.
@ireneista thank you for sharing this, i had no idea

@TSindelar @mick_collins

Now that’s an übermensch!

@TSindelar I mean, Superman *is* an undocumented immigrant refugee child, entering the country (and the Earth) without the proper papers.
@nafmo funny how some people forget that...
@TSindelar Somebody send this to Dean Caine.
