Homes have grown to sizes diametrically opposed to sustainability on a planet reeling under the assault of human civilization, and we don't "need" the ridiculous amount of space now considered to be "success" as a home owner, or even renters. Apartment builders and designers need to realize this as well.
And yes, prices on these has gone up with everything else in housing markets (which is ridiculously inflated and on a hyper-bubble). 2/
The "tiny house" market seems to be seized up on by those with a mindset of making a profit as landlords in b&b schemes, and as "second homes", and others have focused on basic structures "for the homeless" (which they certainly can be and should be also).
I would say that it's not just the "less fortunate, homeless, and/or disabled", but also highly necessary for a great number of people, for the purposes of drastically lowering our impact on the ecosystems of earth. 1/
