Everything is awful but not everything is awful. And if you have the means you can support some of that good as I ride my bike to Los Angeles in a couple of weeks. Thanks y’all.

What to do?

The last couple of months have been a lot. I don’t think I’m the right person to reflect on everything happening on Pennsylvania Avenue right now. I don’t think the world needs yet another mediocre middle-aged white guy spitting his opinions all over the internet. I mean, if I wanted to do that, I’d get myself a podcast or something.

What’s in a name?

Last month, the Institute of Buddhist Studies celebrated its 75th anniversary. Not part of the pubic celebration was a kieshiki service officiated by the BCA Bishop, Rev. Marvin Harada. A keishki service, sometimes called an “affirmation service,” is a short service wherein people affirm their commitment to the Buddhist path and are given a homyo or dharma name. I have been studying Buddhist history, thought, and practice for over thirty years now.

Y’all. We have power. We don’t all have the same kind/level of power. But none of us is powerless. Don’t forget that.

And don’t forget that the strongest powers we have are love and joy in the face their bull shit.

What if, and just spitballing here, it’s not that “elites” are out of touch with “average Americans” but that Americans have been on the receiving end of a 50+ year program to systematically and deliberately undermine education, civic engagement, and voter suppression?

A little institutional self promotion. This #givingtuesday consider giving the gift of #education. Our students go out into the world to support the most suffering of suffering sentient beings, and rely on others generosity to make that happen! 🙏🏼
