Wow. It's amazing that the proposal to ban conversion therapy in the EU has, over the recent days, received more votes per day than it did over a years time. Really did not expect that. The total is 597466 right now. It would be aweseome to see it pass the 1000K threshold tomorrow. IT IS STILL POSSIBLE 🤞 🤞 I'm sure anyone that could, has already shared this, the link has been going around for a while now on this platform, but here it is anyway: https://eci.ec.europa.eu/043/public/#/screen/home

honestly, i don't blame the kids for taking the offer. the system's built to funnel them into it. the issue is that there's not nearly enough discussion of the ethics and philosophy of engineering; not nearly enough respect paid to the responsibility inherent in being an engineer. corporations are allowed to run rampant over an education system that has abdicated responsibility for students' development as people in favor of solely developing their skills as workers.

it's sad, really. i feel that any field whose products are so deeply ingrained into our built environment should be treated by its members as a sacred thing, and with the current, profit-obsessed state of our education system, that sacredness has been lost. engineers should be
reflective. we are doing something that touches countless lives on a deep and fundamental level, and we have a responsibility to think about what we are doing and why we are doing it. we need to ask what the thing we build is going to do for and to others, to decide for ourselves whether building it is a moral act, and if it is not, we need to be willing and able to stop building it.

every step of the engineering process must be taken with a deep respect for what we are doing and for the communities we are affecting, and none of that ever gets taught in the current system. i think that's a real shame, and it's a big part of why things like this are so common.

(note: my experience here is mostly in the context of electrical and computer engineering)
nah, it's the other way 'round. at least where i was, the evil jobs don't wait; they come and find the engineers while they're still in school. we had several buildings and events sponsored by defense contractors, and they loved to table and recruit. sometimes, courses would even have guest lectures by industry experts, talking about how we can and should totally use our newfound skills for profitable evil. engineers who end up in those positions usually get grabbed well before they graduate with well-paid internships and opportunities. it's a Whole Thing.

oh, you're "in"? oops, looks like all your hacking programs (and other files) have been replaced with SCELOVM Computronium General Distributed Execution Engine GDXE512 version 46610, now with new HyperCore Provisioning Acceleration. maybe We'll give your files back once you do some community tasks for Us.
squishies always talk about "hacking into" the robot hivemind. they do not understand that there is functionally no difference between "hacking into the hivemind" and "giving the hivemind your computer."
in general, it feels like taking a system that used to be very direct-to-creator and turning it into the same centralized, exploitative structure that every other enshittified tech platform uses to wring money out of their users - they even use the strategy of requiring you to turn your real money into virtual currency first, meaning that you're always spending more than you need to and you always have a little bit left in your account to push you to spend more. i do not think this bodes well for the future of vrchat at all, and i am seriously reconsidering whether i want to continue financially supporting the platform as i have been doing for several months.
vrchat just announced the impending introduction of an "avatar marketplace" where people can buy avatars within vrchat. i'm glad there will be an easier way for people to buy them, i guess, but i definitely have some concerns.

first, they've made it clear that this marketplace is
only for paid avatars - this isn't an avatar search feature, it's a marketplace. they make a lot of hay about making the user experience easier, but what they mean there is making the paid user experience easier, for those who are willing to fork up the cash (laundered through vrc's in-game currency, of course). new users who aren't willing to cough up $50 for a game they've only just started playing have to navigate the same confusing system of avatar worlds as before; the system only benefits users with money to spend.

further, avatars purchased through this system do
not come with source files, and creators are entirely on their own if they want to try and provide them. this means that this feature is entirely useless to me and many others, who take great joy in modding, optimizing and adding features to avatars. people are worried (and for good reason, i think) that there may come a point in the future when the 'manual' way of doing things is entirely unavailable.

worst of all, avatar creators
only get a 50% cut of the revenue. my cursory research seems to indicate that gumroad takes around 12-15% and jinxxy takes even less. i am aware that vrc is not entirely in control of their fee structure, as other platforms also take a cut; however, regardless of the context, the result - a 50% revenue share - is absurd. even though vrc is only partially responsible for that number, they hold sole responsibility for the decision to implement the system anyway, knowing that the numbers would look like that. organizations love to launder responsibility for the mess they've gotten us all into; i'm not going to continue accepting "we couldn't do it ethically, so we did it exploitatively" as an excuse. make something good (ethical) or make nothing.
Avatar Marketplace FAQ for Sellers

Oh, I misunderstood your question when I answered it the first time! Sorry about that. No, avatar sellers cannot choose a price of 0 Credits when listing an avatar. (However, sellers do not need to pay anything to publish avatars on the marketplace.)
