And let me add, for all of you who grew accustomed to Mastodon’s culture when it only had a couple hundred thousand subscribers, that ship has sailed. You now have millions of new users who care about issues that may not coincide with what you traditionally cared about. This is no longer some small boutique community of like-minded folks on the Internet circa 1994. You’ve now got a lot of new blood, an overwhelming amount of it. I would hope you’d welcome it.
Sometimes I think we have overthought why people use/used social media. More than half the time, I just wanna pull down with my thumb and see something unexpected or interesting or that I want to respond to. For all its cultural importance, I think Twitter’s popularity (among a certain set of people) was mostly about being a really good place to swipe down your thumb. Aaannddd I kind of can’t believe how quickly Mastodon is serving that same purpose for me … and actually more interesting?
