The evening was a powerful reminder of how literature can bridge the particular and the universal, and how survival in an age of extremes demands both courage and imagination. We would like to thank you all for your presence, insightful questions and your commitment to thinking beyond the status quo.
On the occasion of the Dutch translation of her latest book, Indignity: A Life Reimagined, Ypi took us on a sweeping journey - from the Ottoman aristocracy to modern Albania and Greece - challenging us to rethink how we understand history, truth, and our own moral authority. Blending philosophy with personal narrative, she asked: What do we really know about those closest to us? And what can history teach us about the crises of liberal democracy today?
📣 Last night at a sold-out OASE, we gathered with political scientist and philosopher Lea Ypi to explore the fragile boundaries between memory, survival, and solidarity in an age of crisis.

Heads up: tickets for our upcoming talk with Lea Ypi are moving fast. Join us this Friday for a timely conversation about the personal and political challenges that we currently face.

Nikole Hannah-Jones’ The 1619 Project reframes the dominant narrative U.S. history by placing slavery and Black Americans’ contributions at its center. A landmark work that continues to spark urgent debates on democracy, memory, and justice.

📖 On Fri 26 Sept, De Dépendance welcomes political philosopher Lea Ypi for the Dutch launch of her new book Indignity.

Following her international bestseller Free, Indignity blends philosophy and autobiography to explore survival, solidarity, and the fragility of truth in an age of crisis. Ypi invites us to rethink how Europe’s past continues to shape our political present.

📚 On Mon 20 Oct, De Dépendance welcomes philosopher & public intellectual Agnes Callard for The Case for a Philosophical Life.

Celebrating the Dutch translation of her book Open Socrates (named one of The Guardian’s most anticipated of 2025), @agnescallard argues philosophy is not about right answers, but about the shared practice of asking life’s hardest questions.
