Just a thought: #Debirdify *is* open source, so in principle, other people could host their own Debirdify instances with their own Twitter developer account, but if the original one violated Twitter rules than theirs would, too (probably).

#Debirdify has been suspended by Twitter without warning or explanation. Apparently it violated ‘Twitter rules and policies’, but that is all they told us.

We contacted Twitter support about the situation, but we are not particularly optimistic.

We always knew this could happen; it happened to other services in the past, so we are neither particularly surprised nor sad about it.

In the mean time, Fedifinder still works: https://fedifinder.social

Use it while you still can!

One week after the announced shutdown of the free Twitter API access, two days after the announced postponed shutdown, but so far #debirdify still works fine.

At this point no one quite knows what will happen and when – so use Debirdify will you still can! 🙂

To reiterate, $100/month is an absurd amount to raise for a small project like #debirdify, so we will not be collecting donations (let alone use ads) to pay for this if it ever comes. Esp. because Twitter could shut us down at any moment without explanation if they so choose.

On an unrelated note, there has been a conspicuous 20× increase in daily user numbers in the past few days. I wonder why.
Or perhaps I should put a different spin on it: Try #Debirdify now! It might be your last chance! 🙂

So apparently the Twitter leadership has announced that APIs will only be available for a rather hefty fee a week from now. If this really does come to pass, we will not offer #Debirdify any longer because it is a non-commercial service.

We already pay monthly fees for the server (without making any money off of the service). There are no plans to put ads on the site or a possibility to donate. It would not be worth the hassle for such a small service (especially because I am very busy with my day job right now).

That said, it would not be the first time the new Twitter leadership announces a controversial change and then quickly backpedals after realising the ramifications, so let's just lean back and see what happens.

@fringemagnet @tsyum @gamrican Oof, I had not heard of that. That does sound rough. If there are fees being charged, we will probably not offer the #debirdify service any longer.

Unless the fees are very small and the changes are very easy to implement.

That said, it would not be the first time that Twitter's new leadership announced a controversial change that makes everybody unhappy and then backpedalled soon afterwards. So let's see what happens.

Things around #debirdify have become a bit quiet because the project is literally one by one person (that's me, @pruvisto) and I am currently *very* busy with teaching and have no time or energy for this project. Arguably I didn't even have the time when I started it. 😅

The good news is that everything has been running very smoothly those past few weeks. It's just that no new features are being implemented or improvements made at this time.

#Debirdify is now running on the new server, with an average of 1000 interactions (i.e. follower searches etc.) and 600 MB of traffic per hour.

The server is currently handling this load with ease, so hopefully we will be better prepared for the next popularity spike.

Thank you again to Kevin Kappelmann (@KappelmannKevin on Twitter) who was kind enough to configure the shiny new server we just rented.
