Wow! Scientists have observed a single-cell alga evolve in real time into a multicellular organism. The transition took around a year and was caused by the introduction of a predator into the environment. https://nature.com/articles/s41598-019-39558-8

@manlius maybe medications presently defined as psychoplastogens (a sterilized, industry term for some hallucinogenics and dissociatives in trial for mental disorders) could be taken into consideration for counteracting such pruning

"Variables associated with COVID-19 infection
Only smoking was associated with a decreased risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection (OR 0.491; 95% CI 0.275–0.878; p = 0.017). No other factors, neither demographic, clinical, disability, comorbidity, nor treatment was associated with the risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection"

Fascinating review which could explain the difference between dopaminergic antidepressants and anorexiants (which don't induce addiction, with the notable exception of amineptine) and cocaine.
Apparently there was no follow-up (but still cited).

Dopamine reuptake transporter (DAT) "inverse agonism"--a novel hypothesis to explain the enigmatic pharmacology of cocaine - PubMed

The long held view is cocaine's pharmacological effects are mediated by monoamine reuptake inhibition. However, drugs with rapid brain penetration like sibutramine, bupropion, mazindol and tesofensine, which are equal to or more potent than cocaine as dopamine reuptake inhibitors, produce no discern …

"In the largest US study to date on smoking and COVID-19, current and former smoking showed lower risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection than never-smoking, while a history of smoking was associated with higher risk of severe COVID-19."

"Current smoking was associated with lower adjusted rates of SARS-CoV-2 infection (aHR=0.64 95%CI:0.61-0.67)…”

"Bromhexine is an effective, non-invasive, and affordable agent with a low side-effect profile to prevent symptomatic COVID-19. Early use of bromhexine potentially provides another layer of protection and hence it can play a prominent role in ending the pandemic especially given the emergence of new variants and the vaccination challenges faced by developing countries."
