New global data protection map and 2025 review. The top line: data protection still growing: As of the end of 2025, 172 countries and self governing jurisdictions around the world have adopted comprehensive data protection legislation. 146/193 UN Member States have adopted laws, while 5 have adopted comprehensive national regulations adopted by executive order or decree. Five countries adopted comprehensive data protection laws or regs for the first time in 2025.

#IDUAI). Here's an updated map of countries around the world with #FOI laws and bills.

Now, 130 countries (UN Member States) with laws and 7 with regulations covering 92% of world population. Only one new country in last year (Zambia). 27 cos with pending initiatives. 27 countries have pending initiatives for a new law including Malaysia and Iraq.

Here is the update of the global map of countries with data protection laws and bills for International Data Protection Day 2024.

160 countries and self-governing jurisdictions and territories around the world have now adopted comprehensive data protection/privacy laws or regulations to protect personal data held by private bodies. (8 new in 2023). Overall, around 82% of the global population lives in a jurisdiction with a data protection law or regulation.

Happy Right to Know Day 2023. 129 countries have now adopted national access to information laws, including 3 in 2022.

A new bit of research on whistleblowing and a new map covering about 200 jurisdictions around the world.

Summary: Around 60 countries have comprehensive laws, 10 with comprehensive for one sector, 90 with thematic protections, 15 with limited framework protections, and 43 with bills (including have laws above). 49 have no known protections.

Over 150 countries and self-governing jurisdictions and territories around the world have now adopted comprehensive data protection laws to protect personal data held by private and public bodies.

Around 57% of the global population lives in a jurisdiction with data protection.

In 2022, six countries adopted laws for the first time: Indonesia, Cuba, Oman, Eswatini, Sri Lanka and Tanzania.
