Ransomware surged in 2025, but the bigger shift was how attacks are happening.

The 2026 MSP Threat Report breaks down how attackers are bypassing traditional defenses, where security gaps are emerging, and what IT Solution Providers can do to reduce risk earlier in the attack lifecycle.

For years we've been told that grand juries in the US are just a rubber stamp for prosecutors (i.e. that they will indict even pork-based comestibles). But increasingly what we're seeing is that grand juries are the last line of defense against an administration that is hellbent on perverting the justice system. From the NYT:

"Federal prosecutors in Washington sought and failed on Tuesday to secure an indictment against six Democratic lawmakers who posted a video this fall that enraged President Trump by reminding active-duty members of the military and intelligence community that they were obligated to refuse illegal orders, four people familiar with the matter said."

"It was remarkable that the U.S. attorney’s office in Washington — led by Jeanine Pirro, a longtime ally of Mr. Trump’s — authorized prosecutors to go into a grand jury and ask for an indictment of the six members of Congress, all of whom had served in the military or the nation’s spy agencies."

"But it was even more remarkable that a group of ordinary citizens sitting on the grand jury in Federal District Court in Washington forcefully rejected Mr. Trump’s bid to label their expression of dissent as a criminal act warranting prosecution."

Prosecutors Fail to Bring Charges Against Democrats Involved in Illegal Orders Video

The rejection was a remarkable rebuke, suggesting that ordinary citizens did not believe that the lawmakers had committed any crimes.

The Atlantic has released the entire Signal chat showing Hegseth's detailed attack plans against the Houthis. Why not, right? The administration claims none of it is classified.

In the group chat, Hegseth posted:

“1215et: F-18s LAUNCH (1st strike package)”
“1345: ‘Trigger Based’ F-18 1st Strike Window Starts (Target Terrorist is @ his Known Location so SHOULD BE ON TIME – also, Strike Drones Launch (MQ-9s)”
“1410: More F-18s LAUNCH (2nd strike package)”
“1415: Strike Drones on Target (THIS IS WHEN THE FIRST BOMBS WILL DEFINITELY DROP, pending earlier ‘Trigger Based’ targets)”
“1536 F-18 2nd Strike Starts – also, first sea-based Tomahawks launched.”

The Senate Intelligence Committee has cleared Tulsi Gabbard's nomination to be the next director of national intelligence. Gabbard still has to be approved by the full Senate. Heaven help us.

The NYT writes:

"While some Republicans harbor doubts about Ms. Gabbard, she won over the party members on the committee who were wavering, including Senator Susan Collins of Maine, who had voted against Pete Hegseth to serve as defense secretary. Senator Todd Young of Indiana had also asked tough questions in the confirmation hearing but announced his support for Ms. Gabbard in a social media post before the vote."

"Over the weekend, Ms. Gabbard also got support from Elon Musk, who called Mr. Young a “deep state puppet” on his social media platform, X. Mr. Musk deleted the post shortly afterward and wrote that he had spoken to Mr. Young. “I stand corrected,” Mr. Musk wrote. “Senator Young will be a great ally in restoring power to the people from the vast, unelected bureaucracy.”

Said the world's richest man, who somehow suddenly is the unelected head of all government bureaucrats?

It's probably worth noting that the NYT and other publications say the Securities and Exchange Commission is now moving to scale back a special unit of more than 50 lawyers and staff members that had been dedicated to bringing crypto enforcement actions.

Meanwhile, the Trump family is deeply and personally invested in a number of recent memecoin ventures that have attracted billions from investors. President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump each launched their own vanity memecoins last month, dubbed $TRUMP and $MELANIA.

The Wall Street Journal reported recently that the market capitalization of $TRUMP stood at about $7 billion, down from a peak of near $15 billion, while $MELANIA is hovering somewhere in the $460 million mark. Just two months before the 2024 election, Trump’s three sons debuted a cryptocurrency token called World Liberty Financial.

Bloomberg writes that ten days after the Trump/Melania memecoins were launched, an application was filed with the SEC to issue leveraged exchange-traded funds on the coins. "This is precisely what sensible regulation should prevent, letting insubstantial projects into the regulated financial system to extract money from bubble-chasing speculators. People who want to gamble should do it without the false flag of SEC protection; people with real economic projects should raise capital from informed investors with full disclosure."
