So: I teach this class on Minecraft and Modernity, and added a unit on panoramas and sensationalism in modern culture, with an excerpt of Vanessa Schwartz’s classic book SPECTACULAR REALITIES as secondary reading. As an exercise, I sent the students in groups to the Concordia visualization studio, which has an interactive LCD display wall measuring 9.2 m x 1.7 m (363.6" x 68.5") with an available resolution of 11,520 x 2,160 pixels.

It works pretty well.

In which I muse about why monsters in Yeti/Sasquatch/Big Foot movies are so rarely clearly seen: https://davidannandale.com/2022/07/09/yeti-and-sasquatch-the-offscreen-monsters/
Short version? They seem to need a certain mystique, somehow integral to the “they might be real!!!” aspect. Otherwise they’re Wookies.

For a long time, when I'd read a comic with Lex Luthor in it, and he'd be... I dunno, conspiring with a guy who's super power is that he is mediocre at riddles, and maybe Solomon Grundy or someone like that, in order to launch their army of poison turtles into Metropolis, I'd scoff and say, "it's unrealistic that the world's richest man would waste his time and money on something that's only going to showcase to the world how incompetent he is."

I owe DC comics an apology.

It's amazing how many so-called classic movies have terrible script editing. For example at the end of Spartacus loads of characters who aren't Spartacus say they're Spartacus. This is the sort of thing you're supposed to catch in the read through.

#BorisKarloff was 44 and had been acting for 20 years when he was cast in #Frankenstein (1931).

Proof that it's never too late to be an overnight success.

Renato Polselli views plot the way Garth Marenghi does subtext. In THE VAMPIRE OF THE OPERA (1964), he gives us no opera, and not much vampire until the wildly incoherent and frenzied last 30 minutes, but he does give us lots of dancing along the way. And in RITES, BLACK MAGIC AND SECRET ORGIES (1973), he delivers exactly what it says on the tin, all the way and all the time.
