Today in life under subnational competitive authoritarianism

The Wisconsin legislature's Joint Finance Committee - a body of 12 Republicans & <checks notes> 4 Democrats, in a 50-50 state, & which is therefore already so fundamentally unrepresentative & anti-democratic that it is illegitimate under any actual definition of "democracy" or "republic" - is holding 4 hearings on Tony Evers' 2023-25 budget proposal. Zero of them are in the 3 largest population centers of the state

Dan Kelly lost to Karofsky in spring 2020. Later that year, the #WisconsinSupremeCourt narrowly decided several cases that could have altered the election results.

"It doesn’t seem like an overstatement to suggest that voters choosing Karofsky may have saved democracy in Wisconsin. Because around the time when Karofsky was ruling to uphold the results of the 2020 presidential election, Daniel Kelly was working on something to do just the opposite."
