GeofCoxAndrew Simms makes an interesting point here - https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2023/jul/27/airline-emissions-climate-crisis-holiday-advertising - that the example of smoking demonstrates that it's perfectly possible to ban or restrict advertising harmful products and services - like air travel.
To restrict smoking, many countries also used increased taxation - and the frequent flyer levy is a great way to do this for air travel, because it combines social justice with green tax - the more you fly, the more you pay.
Apollo is the Tweetbot of Reddit in that it makes the site bearable and usable the way the base experience does not. So of course Reddit look to now be following suit with pricing/pushing third party devs out of using the API.
