LLMs show creativity and intelligence in a mathematical light that was just barely there before. The current batch are just linear interpolators of things that already exist, and they are trapped in that, but I can see the path towards artificial knowledge discovery.

I'm a bit alarmed with the trend of graduate students using AI-powered apps that relieve them from the "burden" of reading the papers themselves. The result is horrifyingly shallow, students sound like ChatGPT. Hopefully, this fad will die quickly.
Or PhD programs will need to institute rules that govern who and when can use those tools -- maybe integrated with the candidacy exam.
