Bitcoin is dirty, dirty, dirty.

“The worldwide BTC mining network consumed 173.42 TWh of electricity during the 2020–2021 period, bigger than the electricity consumption of most nations. The mining process emitted over 85.89 Mt of CO2eq in the same timeframe, equivalent to the emission caused by burning [42 million tons] of coal or running 190 natural gas‐fired power plants.”

Helping someone debug something, said they asked chatgpt about what a series of bit shift operations were doing. He thought it was actually evaluating the code, yno like it presents itself as doing. Instead its example was a) not the code he put in, with b) incorrect annotations, and c) even more incorrect sample outputs. Has been doing this all day and had just started considering maybe chatGPT was wrong.

I was like first of all never do that again, and explained how chatGPT wasnt doing anything like what he thought it was doing. We spent 2 minutes isolating that code, printing out the bit string after each operation, and he immediately understood what was going on.

I fucking hate these LLMs. Empowerment is learning how to figure things out, how to make tools for yourself and how to debug problems. These things are worse than disempowering, teaching people to be dependent on something that teaches them bullshit.

Edit: too many ppl reading this as "this person bad at programming" - not what I meant. Criticism is of deceptive presentation of LLMs.

Humanitarian corridors and safe passage is needed to allow non combatants to escape out of Gaza into liveable places nearby where their human rights can be respected. The international community needs to step up and grasp this nettle.
@copsewood @vmbrasseur Sounds like Mens' eyesight is optimised for noticing predators, then, while Womens' is better adapted for picking out camouflaged prey? ;)
@copsewood @actuallyautistic @neurodivergence It could be that autism benefits the tribe, when present at an appropriate frequency within the population. Who is to say that evolution hasn't tapped into something simple like inflammation levels to regulate this frequency at a level close to what is ideal to maximize the benefit?
I worry that dominant discourse is split between two delusions. In one, Ukraine is around the corner from total victory & if can only fail if we don't believe enough. In the other, Western unity is ever on the brink of collapse.
Reality: War poised to be long & remains crucial to European security. That, not feel-good stuff, is at the core of transatlantic support for Ukraine. But Eur/US domestic politics that isn't about Ukraine could change Ukraine policy, to detriment of long-term security.
@copsewood @RickiTarr We might see the end of rapid technological progress in the next few decades, maybe even the beginning of a fallback to more primitive technologies, because our entire global economy is absolutely unsustainable and eating the future for today's profits. I believe we will collapse to a much simpler society with very simple technology eventually, but I hope I won't be alive to see it happen.
The sheer complexity of our technology comes with a steep price, and the only sane course of action would be to design complex technological artifacts to be as robust and lasting as possible, to be easy to repair and upgrade, and not to see how far we can push the technology but to find a state that is good enough, and keep it that way. But in order to do that, we would have to do away with silly things like capitalism.

The official term is "hallucination" 🙂
