Mastodon can feel like a mashup of twitter and reddit.
On one hand tweet-like posts come chronologically, not subject to up-votes; on the other hand instances can be like subreddits - communities formed around niche topics with more or less arbitrary mod rules.
Instead of trying to follow too many individuals, I follow instances (@Fedilab app allows this - basically a bookmark to view the public posts on the other instance).
Still, surfacing content is not automatic, requires effort.
