Good thinking. Perhaps toy banks alongside food banks in the run-up to Christmas (though ideally all year round—kids have birthdays too) would also be a good idea.

Easiest switch would probably be LinuxMint for Windows users and Ubuntu Budgie (or maybe iBuntu) for Mac users.
