Today would be Kalief Browder's 30th birthday. He was only 16 when he was detained in Rikers for the next 3 years without being tried or convicted of a crime. 2 of those years were spent in solitary.
Kalief was falsely accused of stealing a backpack and lost his youth to a broken system over a lack of bail money.His trial was repeatedly delayed due to an inept prosecution and a missing complainant.
He died by suicide at 22. Rest in power ❤️
