I went to the #Boulder #UrbanSketchers event at the library yesterday. It was so nice to paint outside and have members of the community try urban sketching for the first time.

Our group has framed our sketches for display at the George Reynolds library. Come check them out, and join us on 3/21 and 4/18 at the library for more urban sketching.

Domo Japanese Restaurant is so atmospheric that I want to paint every corner of it. I tried to evoke sumi-e style with the bold brush strokes and I think it turned out okay? #watercolor #painting

I went to the Denver Art Museum drop-in drawing today with my #UrbanSketchers friends. We were tasked to celebrate the Year of the Horse and draw inspiration from the Asia galleries.

There were about 40 people drawing so each horse exhibit had a few people sitting in front of it. I ended up creating a horse tessellation (with reference I found online) with the pattern from a batik hip wrapper.

I really enjoyed the challenge! It felt like Iron Chef where the secret ingredients were the Asia galleries and horse.

Happy Groundhog Day #watercolor #painting
I am not confident enough to draw faces but it was so cold that not an inch of skin was exposed hehe. #watercolor #painting
Reference photo. Yes I took it while doing groceries.
I keep feeling I'm cheating when I use ink with watercolor. But there is no cheating! Maybe I'll call it watercolor drawing rather than painting?
I tried impressionism. I think I got that part, but I don't think you can tell what the subject matter is. #watercolor #impressionist #painting

#UrbanSketchers #Boulder meetup at Panera today. It's a beautiful sunny day, but on the cold side. Fortunately we can see the Flatirons from inside the restaurant and sketch in warmth.

I went back to watercolor plus ink instead of pure watercolor because I can quickly capture the textures with a few pen strokes this way. My shadow exercise yesterday made me bolder in using strong colors and that was what gave dimension to the mountain. #watercolor #painting

Went to the Pissarro exhibit at Denver Art Museum yesterday with my urban sketching friends. I decided to paint a scene that let me practice two things I was afraid of: shadows and people. Turns out with watercolor I just need to put a light wash on top and the transparency creates a natural shadow. For people, I was inspired by the impressionist depictions in the Pissarro paintings and I am quite happy with the result. #watercolor #painting
