I found the segment very interesting that spoke about the increase in engagement with false news after Trump was elected as president. It made me wonder what about that specific time period or election caused fake news to be more popular than the real news presented. i can think of multiple reasons myself. #so315
I really liked the example presented in the Jensen reading about human nature. the authors talk about how you can say it is just "human nature" for students to cheat on exams, but when you change the setting from a 250 student classroom to a 25 student classroom, less people are likely to attempt cheating. this idea manifests in the way our society is structured as well. The setting or system that we are in creates the layout for how humans will act or behave. #so315
In the first reading, I found it very interesting to read about all the different types of biases that may be seen in journalism. I found the bad news bias bulletin point particularly interesting. It made me think about whether media outlets present news as worse than it is to gain more attention. it made me think about how much news presented may be overexaggerated just to catch the eye of more individuals. #so315
Something I found interesting from chapter 7 was how large the decrease in numbers of Americans who trust the media has been in the last few years. This can be explained due to right winged people believing the media is full of liberal bias and left wing people believing the news media advances the interests of corporations and other elites. Although I believe that there are ways that journalists can prevent personal biases from effecting their writing, people will always point fingers #so315
I really liked the point they made in the Jensen article where they talked about the importance in remembering any single issue is part of multiple, cascading ecological crises the world faces. I think journalists own in one particular issue and report the recent events adequately and precisely, yet fail to address what may have been a factor in causing this to happen. #so315
I liked the idea of the awareness instinct. It puts into perspective how big of a role news and journalism plays in our lives. Not only is it a way of shaping our thoughts and opinions, it also is a way for social bonding. I never thought about it that way until I thought back to how often my family, friends, and I's conversations revert to talking about something going on within the world currently. Without it there is a sense of "darkness" that people feel #so315
In the article about false balance, I never thought about how many times when there is an argument and a counterargument, the "correct" thing thought to do is meet somewhere in the middle to settle the argument, even if one side has plenty of scientific evidence supporting it. I think arguments sometime should be settled by viewing which side has significantly more scientific evidence supporting it. #so315
I think the prominence of technology in our day and age makes journalism increasingly more difficult. In the chapter, the authors mention how analytics and how much audience interaction they receive depicts which type of media gets publicized in the future. I think this doesn't allow people who only consume media coverage through technology to not get a full gage on what is happening all around the world #so315
#so315 it is interesting to hear how much Trump has used his power to have control over the media. It makes you wonder how much of the press and news we intake through the media is based off of his own opinions, rather than the full truth. it goes back to the point we've talked consistently about in class that states it is hard to know what we can trust on the media
@lilpoundcake1 I also found it interesting to read about digital inequalities. It is so normalized in our area for most young adults, adults, and older adults to have unlimited access to the internet. In some societies, that is not the case and finding access to the internet could be quite difficult. #so315
