Catodon.social and Catodon closing down

I thought whether I should post this from
@catodon 's account but I'd like to speak on a more personal level, since it's now just me in Catodon anyway. So, I'm pretty sad about it coming to this, but what can you do - things like that can happen in group projects. We started as a fork of Firefish, then rebased to Iceshrimp, and then we froze development waiting for Iceshrimp's C# rewrite to be completed, since the announced timeline at the time said that the first stable should be out before the end of 2024. This target wasn't met - of course, they don't owe anyone anything, I'm just describing what happened. Combined with the bitter aftertaste my involvement in Iceshrimp left to me, it's not a project I would like for Catodon to rely on. If Catodon was to continue, I would like it to be, or at least start off as, a more minimalistic soft fork of Sharkey, without the local-only features etc.

However, at this point all devs who were interested in Catodon have moved on to other things, so it's not feasible for the project (and the server, which was mostly meant as a showcase for the software) to continue. On November 10 the domain name expires, and I'm thinking of not renewing it.

If any of the existing members wants to maintain the server, either as an Iceshrimp or as a Sharkey instance, drop me a line, if you're serious then I'd happily transfer the domain and vps so that the server can stay online.

I apologize to anyone affected by this, I hope you don't find it difficult to find a new home. I have to say that we never accepted donations, so we practically run a free service for two years. Wish it could go on, but I simply don't have the technical knowledge to run the server responsibly. I am not a sysadmin or a dev, and it's not something I feel very drawn to - I'm sure ADHD also hasn't helped me to learn more about running a server. I'm ok with it.

So there you have it, in around 50 days catodon.social goes kaput, unless something improbable happens - like if someone wants to take the responsibility of running the server, or if a javascript dev thinks that a scaled-down version of Sharkey sounds like something they'd like to try.

Thanks for being part of this, I really believe this could have been a fun project - I loved being part of Firefish and I wanted a chance to do some things better this time, but it seems that it wasn't meant to be! Oh, well =)

Catodon update, May 2024

Catodon Social
Hello there! If you are on #Iceshrimp, #Firefish or #Sharkey, there's a new security patch out so your server admin should update the software immediately. #Catodon has also merged the patch from upstream #Iceshrimp and catodon.social has been updated
#Catodon is looking for a co-lead dev! They need to be comfortable with git, and able to manually install a Catodon server without scripts. All races, genders, sexual orientations welcome. No fascists or sexists. If you think you're up to the task, have some time and would like to be part of a team effort, let's talk! Find us on matrix, at #catodon:matrix.org .
Important announcement, everyone! šŸŽ‰

After giving this a lot of thought and discussing with the wonderful people that build Iceshrimp,
#Catodon will rebase to #Iceshrimp. We feel that it's the right decision for the road ahead, as Iceshrimp is another #firefish fork that focuses in improving performance and they have already done some amazing improvements, like full Mastodon API support. With Firefish's future uncertain, we think it's better to stay closer to an actively maintained project. The two projects will stay distinct, as we have different design goals, but we have a common codebase so we feel this makes sense.

Just to be clear on all fronts and to answer the obvious question in advance, yes, Iceshrimp is also currently doing a full rewrite in C#, which is a few months away, and we haven't decided if we'll adopt this yet - it's a strong possibility, but we're keeping our options open. We're confident they're doing a great job, still, we'll weigh what the best decision for Catodon is on this when it's ready and the time comes.

Just wanted to let you know that this might push Catodon's development back a little, as it's sort of a structural change, but we feel that it's worth it, and that it might be better for the broader community. Catodon development will resume once rebasing to Iceshrimp is finished, and then we'll have better foundations to build this on.
Happy to annyounce that our matrix space #catodon-space:matrix.org is now part of #activitypub-community:codelutin.com, a matrix community of countless ActivityPub related projects! It's great to be there with the rest of the fedi community!

Here's another new feature in #Catodon, cherry picked from #Firefish! A language selector, so that you can define your post's language. Once timeline filters are implemented, you'll be able to filter posts by language(s)!
A handy little new feature in #Catodon, implemented by @linca - thank you!

You know how Mastodon and Misskey show only the number of direct replies under each post? This doesn't provide enough information, as a post might have just one direct reply, but it might be a thread with twenty more comments nested - yet you only see "1" reply.

In Catodon, you still see the number of direct replies in your timeline, but when you click on a post and see the detailed view, next to the number of direct replies you can also see the number of sub-replies under them! So in this case we have 55 direct replies, nesting 118 sub-replies. This way you can easily see how deep the discussion under a post goes at any time, without having to go through every thread! Does this sound useful to you?
