Typical HE contracts say something like "your working hours are XX or however long it takes to fulfill your duties". Our workloads are unsustainable. Real-terms pay has decreased 25% since 2009. Pensions are being slashed. Too many staff work under precarious conditions. Inequality in academia is still rife. ENOUGH. If we are to continue offering high quality education for our students, and delivering research that addresses the challenges facing the world, we need change NOW! #UCUrising
Absolutely LOVE today's #GoogleDoodle. It celebrates Marie Tharp, does an excellent job of communicating complex terms in a simple and interactive way, and is upfront about the struggles she faced as a female geologist. πŸ‘ https://g.co/doodle/pwg8c79

Happy #polarprideday! Here's to all the wonderful polar scientists around the world, and to a more inclusive and diverse future in this important and exciting field of research! Sad not to be joining #polarpride activities in person today (thanks COVID!), but celebrating at home with jammy doughnuts! 😁🌈 #polarpride2022
Hello Mastodon world! For new followers, I'm a glaciologist working at Durham University in the UK, specialising in glacial hydrology and the importance of meltwater for water security. I'll be posting about science and environmental change (especially in polar and mountain regions), but also about my passions outside of work, including climbing, cycling, and art. Also "mum" to a beautiful fur baby called Islay!
