Who they choose to federate with and how they enforce rules and norms will impact your decisions. Are you aligned in your goals?
Also yes they can read your DMs.
For those just setting up Mastodon accounts now, I'd highly recommend *not* signing up for one of the large general instances (e.g. mastodon.social) and instead seeking out a smaller instance you think you'll vibe with. Your overall experience will be much better.

Fediverse requires a certain level of mutual trust between server admins and account holders. There are pros and cons to this arrangement.
I'm glad the default Mastodon interface decided to use "posts" instead of "toots". Way easier for people to understand.
@axz Sounds like they're just as obsessed as you are if you're willing to stand in a line like that. :P
@nprandchill Still one week out from summer starting (quarter system problems).
I'm going to be at
#ICA22 this week. This will be my first in-person conference as a grad student. Exciting!
@axz @andresmh @karger There's a hacky way to do groups: https://a.gup.pe/
Pleroma also has group features built-in, but Mastodon is very against that iirc.
@andrewkuznet Great idea, I sent in my info. :)
