Walnut Sideboard
Walnut Sideboard
I finished that night stand
It’s a little scratch and dent given it’s made out of offcuts, scraps and extras from other projects but I think it came out okay. Three coats of fake “tung oil” finish and it came up to a nice warm semi-gloss, and ambered up the pine enough to take the edge off the grain. Yeah I’m going on a bit of a victory lap here, I’m pretty happy with how this one turned out.
Night Stand work in progress
I’m slapping together a night stand for my cousin out of crap I have lying around the shop, and I’m Carcass is “hardwood” mystery meat 7-ply from Lowe’s. Joinery is all dovetails; lower shelf and mid frame are sliding dovetails, upper frame is half-blinds. I did that to see if I could. Answer: Barely. The sliding dovetails were fine but the half-blinds wanted to blow the plywood apart. Face frame is rift sawn traumatized pine. That’s what I managed to salvage from a damaged section of 8:4, and judging by the growth rings that tree had been through at least one divorce. The curve on the bottom I laid out with a bowed spline. First time I’ve actually done that. It’s attached to the carcass Norm style, with Tite-bond and #10 biscuits. Tomorrow I’ll build the drawer.
When you see it, you'll swear too.
End table drawer with secret compartment
I posted these end tables here awhile ago [https://lemmy.ca/post/10051658]. The carcasses turned out pretty well but I was never happy with the drawers. I implemented them as the world’s worst piston fit drawers, they had like a quarter inch of slop so they were less drawers and more boxes that fit in a hole. I had some time on my docket so I remade the drawers, converted them to side hung, fitted them better to the space provided, and lengthened them. I had just enough poplar to make an additional drawer back, so I implemented @Tolookah@discuss.tchncs.de [https://discuss.tchncs.de/u/Tolookah] 's suggestion and added a secret compartment. I haven’t made the stops yet so it will just pull right on out but I’ve made a piece of furniture with a secret compartment in it. Now I need something cool to put in it. Maybe a smallish bottle of scotch and a pair of glencairns?

My collection of Longest Johns CDs
Not long ago the band was kickstarting their latest album, Voyage (bottom-right) and offering a bundle of their older albums as a bonus add-on, so I took the opportunity to pick them up. My overall favorite is Cures What Ails Ya (top-right) though they all have songs I quite like. Even though I ripped them to FLAC and mostly listen to them on my phone that way, I’m quite happy to have these. I paid some musicians and got a bunch of music!

Brick Pattern End Grain Cutting Board
Walnut and maple., it’s an inch and a quarter thick, 12 1/2 inches wide and about 17 inches long. While it is an end grain cutting board I actually built it with kneading dough in mind, I don’t intend to cut on this one, not for awhile anyway. Built it this weekend and baked some bread with it today. Which is why my mixer is covered in flour. I’m really happy with this one.
