Another big jump in atmospheric CO₂ measured at Mauna Loa*: based on daily values, the June average was ~429.7 ppm, that's 2.8 ppm higher than last year!

*) Trump regime now threatening to discontinue this unique and essential measurement series running since 1958

What's the preferred alternative to Google Maps' **review** function? I loved leaving reviews, pictures and miscellaneous info on Google Maps, but obviously want to turn away from it.

As an example, where can I leave a review for the local library here, to let others know how the process of getting a pass was, what the work room is like, where you can leave your bike, where I can drop a few photos, et cetera?

I know OpenStreetMap exists, but where and how do I actually submit my ℹ️ information? And are there other, maybe even better, alternatives, open source?

After two years of massacre in Gaza, true villains revealed as couple of punky hip-hop bands

After several years of indiscriminate massacre in the Gaza Strip, the government is finally confident enough in its intelligence to reveal that the true villains of the whole situation are a couple…

Funny to see how the sentiment about AI on Hacker News is shifting from "absolute fucking hype" like 6 months ago to now more and more critical voices. To be clear, most commentors are still caught up in the hype there, but I see a positive trend. #AI
While on holidays, aside from running a sponsorship drive, I’ve had a little time for recreational coding. So I’m back on Decaf Sucks. Tonight I merged the beginnings of our low-level geocoding support. A small PR, but some interesting things in there if you want to poke around: https://github.com/decafsucks/decafsucks/pull/31
Add beginnings of geocoding support by timriley · Pull Request #31 · decafsucks/decafsucks

Add the beginnings of Geocoding support: Create a Geocoding slice. Add a client for the LocationIQ service; right now this does forward geocoding only. Return results from the LocationIQ searches ...

The European Accessibility Act is now in force, making life easier for millions of people living with a disability or reduced mobility.

This means:

✔️ More accessible products and services across the EU
✔️ Easier access to transport, education, and job opportunities
✔️ Better prices through fairer competition
✔️ More jobs for accessibility experts

Together, we’re building a more inclusive Europe where accessibility is a reality, not an option.

@EUCommission

Does this mean we are finally getting clean indoor air??

@evaknoet @EUCommission Also clean air outside please by declaring what everybody that had 1 lesson of physics understands: burning wood (also indoor) is a disaster for the climate and 1 lesson of biology: disaster for health of every living thing.
@EUCommission The act has the *potential* to make life better. As the example in the US of 35 years of ADA have sadly shown, a law is only as good as its enforcement. #Ableism #Accessibility #Law
@meganL
It's mainly aimed at promoting web accessibility by commercial entities. Government organizations can easily dodge the Act's stipulations. It can't even force my own public org to make its public facing website accessible.
@EUCommission

@anantagd @meganL @EUCommission Public facing websites are not covered by the EAA, that’s true. They are covered by the Web Accessibility Directive, which is law since 2018. Unfortunately it’s pretty tooth-less, much fewer toots than the EAA.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_Accessibility_Directive

Web Accessibility Directive - Wikipedia

@yatil
The rest of the EAA has a "get out of jail free" card that will make this entire Act toothless and unenforceable.
@meganL @EUCommission
@anantagd @meganL @EUCommission Where can I find that card that I’m 100% sure does not exist? Which provision is that?
@yatil @meganL @EUCommission Here you are. Disclaimer, for my Dutch DSO, I modelled the impact of the EAA on our business functions/capabilities. https://www.taylorwessing.com/en/interface/2025/accessibility/key-eu-accessibility-act-exemptions-and-the-challenges-they-pose e.g. "The disproportionate burden exemption relieves businesses from specific accessibility requirements if adhering to them would impose undue hardship on the organisation."
I'm blind and I can assure you that many orgs will grasp this to get out of the Act's obligations. But thank you for playing.
Key EU Accessibility Act exemptions and the challenges they pose

Jo Joyce and Nathalie Koch look at the scope of application of three key exemptions to EU Accessibility Act requirements.

@yatil @meganL @EUCommission "Under the fundamental alteration exemption, a manufacturer of otherwise in-scope products or a provider of relevant services may decline to bring them into compliance with the EAA if doing so would represent a fundamental alteration to the nature of those goods or services (14(1)(a))"

@anantagd @meganL @EUCommission Yeah. And making the outage map accessible does alter the nature of the outage map in what way? It does not, so this exception does not apply. As for disproportional burden, this just prevents market surveillance agencies from forcing businesses out of the market unreasonably. They can still demand reasonable fixes.

I have talked to a number of agencies and people involved there and they said it will be a very high bar for companies claiming it applies to them.

@EUCommission
I am blind. And I work for a Dutch DSO. My org argued that since energy users are not "consumers" in the sense of the EAA, it isn't necessary for my publicly funded organization to make our presently inaccessible homepage accessible. Which means that I, a blind employee, cannot even access our own homepage to find out about grid outages. So thanks a lot, EC

@anantagd @EUCommission The EU Commission is not automatically aware of all offences just because the law has now come into force.

It is still necessary for offences to be reported. So now it's your turn.

@EUCommission ⚠️ PSA: Every European "Act" promoted via this unidirectional broadcast account now comes with a fine print "if daddy Donald allows it". 🍊 👑
@EUCommission
The comment section cracks me up, people will simply never be happy. No matter what you do, help the poor, help the disabled, invest in new tech, have a reasonable target for sustainability, invest in defense, someone will NEED to complain or hate.
And what's crazy is that all of this happens in the same group, the left. It's not even a matter of left vs right, fighting and having polar opposite views, inside that same left, drastically different opinions, people go at each other.
@EUCommission das glaube ich erst, wenn ich es sehe. Papier ist geduldig
@EUCommission so what are you doing to make all the new city centers redesigned to be so very pedestrian and anti car accessible to the elderly, the handicapped, people who can't walk a mile from some parking lot to the shops they have always known and can't get to any more?
