Came for the Ben Folds reference, stayed for the post. So much of what Joe writes about in “I’ve got my philosophy (Keeps my feet on the ground)” maps with my train of thought on the whys and hows of personal sites, especially so when it comes to being less searchable—I was nodding along hard to Johanna’s Search Engine Hostility post that he links to; take a look at my robots.txt. For me, this is all about fun and learning and doing things on ... https://campegg.com/2024/01/14/came-for-the.html

That New York City Transit Authority Graphic Standards Manual that I posted about earlier? Turns out that it’s available in full from the Internet Archive. Rad. https://campegg.com/2024/01/13/theres-a-really.html

Had a great time chatting with the IndieWeb crew at the Galactic Bonus Homebrew Website Club earlier today. Always nice to meet some new people and to actually talk to some of the people behind the sites I follow. Big thanks to James for hosting! https://indieweb.org/

While I think I’m in agreement with the broad premise of the article, I’m not sure that I altogether agree with the statement that “Utility Eats Value for Breakfast”— even allowing for the concept of “ diminishing marginal utility,” I see value as a function of utility, where greater utility will deliver greater value over time, so saying that “utility eats value” seems like a weird statement; they’re not in opposition with each other, so ... https://campegg.com/2024/01/02/while-i-think.html

If you’re reading this, you probably already know about Manu’s People & Blogs series. But on the off chance you don’t, you really should check it out—it’s a brilliant source of new people to follow, or to get a bit more insight into why the people you might already be following do what they do… so far, it’s about 50/50 for me; it’s kind of fun to see someone I already know of pop up in the feed. https://peopleandblogs.com/
People and Blogs

A weekly newsletter, delivered every Friday, where interesting people talk about themselves and their blogs.

Manu is one thousand percent correct:

"We don’t need more technology. Technology won’t fix human behaviour. We need kindness, we need compassion, we need a willingness to interact honestly with strangers online. That’s not something you can solve with a better protocol. We simply have to fight the good fight, day after day, trying our best to make the web a better place."

New tech can be cool and fun and all—and building is way more fun than ... https://campegg.com/2023/12/02/manu-is-one.html

And done! I’ve managed to make my way through a Certificate of Specialization in Strategy from Harvard Business School Online—the last few months have been a lot of fun… and a lot of work (but mostly fun). I can’t speak highly enough of the three courses; from Professor Felix Oberholzer-Gee’s Business Strategy, to Professor Clayton Christensen’s Disruptive Strategy, to Professor Rebecca Henderson’s Sustainable Business Strategy, all the ... https://campegg.com/2023/11/16/and-done-ive.html

I pre-ordered LEGO Space: 1978-1992 back in May, then promptly forgot about it, so was very pleasantly surprised when it showed up on my doorstep. Some of my most vivid childhood memories (and even some more recent ones) are of building classic space sets, so I’ve been loving the nostalgic vibes that have come from leafing through this. https://www.darkhorse.com/Books/3008-174/LEGO-Space-1978-1992-HC

Best. Crossword. Clue. Ever.

Sustainable Business Strategy was quite an eye-opener! I’d read Professor Rebecca Henderson’s book before the course, and getting additional depth from the case studies was incredible, especially the work done at Norsk Gjenvinning (seriously… I’d never have thought a Norwegian waste management company could be so fascinating!).
