In my cheap gaming rig antics my dodgy AMD RX 580 arrived from eBay. It is, as expected, pretty dodgy!

It’s got a sticker on it suggesting it’s an Asus card but it seems to be a bit of a mongrel and running a firmware with odd clock speeds optimised for crypto mining.

Oh and it’s missing a fan blade so I’ve removed the fan in question to stop it shaking itself apart.

It’s working under Linux albeit with sub-par peformance, but the Windows drivers won’t work with it at all (why it was cheap).

Right I've finished fiddling with this hardware now. Let's do some gaming! Suddenly my 500Mb internet makes sense. 😆

I love that the Ubuntu MATE installer has a screenshot of @wimpy’s Steam library and suggests you install Minecraft. That is exactly my plan for this machine. 😁

My kids have quite a head start on learning how to play though. This might be embarrassing.

I’ve got the day off work to look after the kids today. My air cooler isn’t going to be here for a few days so needs must. 😆

My gamble seems to have paid off! Buying stuff you haven’t seen working off marketplace is always stressful!

I got myself a Ryzen 3 1300X, 16GB DDR4, an Asus B350 chipset motherboard and a Corsair AIO cooler I have nowhere to mount for £60. Huge bargain!

Then a couple of years old Thermaltake 600w PSU for £25 off another seller.

Currently running with the AMD Radeon 7850 I got for £15 last week and destined for my son’s machine.

I’ll find out if it’s stable under load tomorrow!

Managed to eBay snipe myself a Corsair 650w PSU last night. Hopefully that solves the instability issues with Charlie’s machine when it has the nice AMD graphics card. 🤞

Charlie (5 and a half) installed his “new” graphics card today along with a 500w OCZ PSU I bought in 2010.

I also also setup a Minecraft server with his older brother (almost 7) on an old laptop.

There were some complete system freezes initially but copypastaing a couple of kernel parameters seems to have sorted that.

We have also been outside to the park and enjoyed the sunshine. 😆

Edit: Crashes came back. I’m inclined to think the PSU is at fault. Back to the little Nvidia 210 card for now

It's alive!!! This is my roughly 20 year old Brother mono laser printer. I got it for £5 on Gumtree a few years ago. It worked for a bit but then started having paper feed issues.

I bought new roller rubbers for it a year or two ago but have been putting off taking it apart to fit them since. However today I did the job and it seems to have worked. 🎉

This thing is *so* user serviceable. There is a 250 page manual available online. Basically all the screws are identical and a sensible size.

Had beer last night, got stuck on the way home due to a train cancellation (because some station had lighting issues!?), woke up at at 7am by children, dead now. 🪦
There is also every possibility that this absolute terror is somehow to blame and there is no actual technology issue. #catsofmastodon
