Who decided what orientation the pillars of creation should be viewed in (and therefore that it makes sense to refer to them as a vertical structure such as "pillars")? Does it follow from applying Earth's north-south pole axis as up and down? Does the person who discovered them name them and the orientation comes after the fact?
