The Boulder at Paidge Avenue & Provost Street

In this article, I connect the dots between a photograph of a boulder in Greenpoint and a Covid-era walk along an abandoned elevated rail line.

Anxious Thoughts and Dreams Occupy the Minds of Johnson Tsang's Porcelain Figures — Colossal

Johnson Tsang continues to stretch the limits of human consciousness as he blurs the boundary between the real and surreal.

My newsletter for February is about finding awe during my winter walks, and my revelation about our duty as pedestrians to help keep these snowy paths cleared for each other.

Plus, some good urbanism links at the end and short blurb about a great new phonebook project. #urbanism

"In the 15-Hour City, the most important tenet is freedom of movement. Here, you can travel anywhere you want, as long as it’s on the handful of roads we afford to maintain with a gas-guzzling car that costs half your paycheck."

These kids are smart not to drive but leave it to the adults to turn it into a crisis.

I will forever be baffled by some folks absolutely addiction to car culture and the utter cluelessness about how destructive it has been to human health #urbanism

Why aren’t teenagers driving anymore?

Fewer teens are driving and parents are trying to figure out why. The reasons may include anxiety, technology and protective parents.

Love this video from James Wong about Green Gyms in Singspore. The sky sidewalks are awe inspiring. I must visit at some point in my remaining years! https://www.instagram.com/reel/Cozw5c0sTEC/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y
James Wong 🌱 | Plants & Nature on Instagram: "#ᵃᵈ EPISODE 7: GREEN GYMS 🏃🏻🌳 I am fascinated by the growing stack of research which consistently shows that spending time in green space has measurable health benefits on everything, from healing times in hospitals, to reducing the need for pain medication, even improving exercise performance. Put a bunch of blokes on treadmills and play them views of the natural world on big screens, and trial participants tend not only to run further, and perceive the workout to be easier, they even feel a higher sense of self worth after. An amazing synergistic effect that boosts the positive impact of exercise on mental and physical health, even from just looking at simulated images of parks! Investing in green space for societies isn’t just the right thing to do, but the smart thing too. Did I mention that trials also suggest it reduces anti social behaviour and improves social cohesion? That’s why I am so excited about the huge network of green trails for walking, running and cycling that are being set up across the city of Singapore. Southern Ridges is my new favourite run in the world, where you stride between jungle canopies and space age skyscrapers, connecting three hilltop parks along the island’s West coast. (Of course, it’s all wheelchair friendly too, so open to everyone.) To me it’s such an inspirational model of how cities could look, and how everyone in society would benefit, if decision makers embraced the healing power of nature that scientists are uncovering. Pretty staggeringly, Singapore plans to create 1,000 kilometres more cycle ways much like this by the end of the decade. I think I might need to move. Huge thanks to @visit_singapore for sponsoring this episode. As always, if you aren’t following @beixin & @robinlamhj and their amazing adventures making films and photos of the region you are missing a trick! If you’d like to learn more about Southern Ridges or anything else about Singapore’s green journey, drop your question in the comments & I’ll do my very best to help. New episode every Saturday!
