How much value do all our datasets, our data assets, provide? By and large, there is very little data – or systematic collection of data – on dataset usage. There’s no easy way to find all the users of a dataset and to see how the data has been used, or what research it may have contributed to.

In the US, a small group of federal statistical agencies have taken steps to address this problem, using a platform called Democratizing Data.

The UK gov this week announced a £10 million investment to “jumpstart regulators’ AI capabilities” as part of its commitment to a “pro-innovation approach to AI regulation.” Will this be sufficient to answer criticisms that it has so far been “too slow” to give regulators the tools they need to police the growing usage of AI?
