How much value do all our datasets, our data assets, provide? By and large, there is very little data – or systematic collection of data – on dataset usage. There’s no easy way to find all the users of a dataset and to see how the data has been used, or what research it may have contributed to.

In the US, a small group of federal statistical agencies have taken steps to address this problem, using a platform called Democratizing Data.

Real World Data Science - Democratizing Data: Using natural language processing and machine learning to capture dataset usage

Real World Data Science speaks with Julia Lane, professor at the NYU Wagner Graduate School of Public Service and visiting fellow at RTI International, about an initiative that seeks to improve public understanding of how datasets are used and the value they provide.

What is #DataScience? A new and exciting set of skills, necessary for analyzing 21st century data? Or is it (as some have claimed) a rebranding of #statistics?

"Opinions on data science abound," say Jonathan Auerbach, David Kepplinger, and Nicholas Rios, but "few appear to be based on data or science."

Auerbach et al. use two popular data science algorithms to examine the difference between #DataScientists, #Statisticians, and other occupations.

The UK gov this week announced a £10 million investment to “jumpstart regulators’ AI capabilities” as part of its commitment to a “pro-innovation approach to AI regulation.” Will this be sufficient to answer criticisms that it has so far been “too slow” to give regulators the tools they need to police the growing usage of AI?

And will it heed calls to guard against "regulatory capture" and to move away from a "narrow focus on high-stakes AI safety"?

Real World Data Science - £10m for UK regulators to ‘jumpstart’ AI capabilities, as government commits to white paper approach

It’s been a busy seven days for AI news in the UK as two major government reports were published, millions of pounds of new investments were announced, and warnings rang out of the risk of ‘regulatory capture.’ Here are some key takeaways.

The UK government has published a framework for the use of #generativeAI setting out 10 principles for departments and staff to think about if using, or planning to use, this technology. It talks specifically about the value a multi-disciplinary team can bring to #AI projects, and emphasises the role of #DataScientists:
