We have to deromanticize community. It's not some pristine untouched forest of soft moss and good vibes. The corporations count on that misconception to stripmine us for content.

Community has always been as weird and messy as humans are. It's work. It's relationships. It's hard. There isn't a magic number. They aren't inherently anticommercial. They don't all look or act the same.

To this extent I'm really interested to know how the age breakdown of people on the #Fediverse. On one hand it would seem to make sense to me that most people here remember the "old internet" before the centralization and they're here to rekindle that flame of independence. On the other hand the youths are generally pretty up on this whole technology thing. I grew up on the internet and since then smartphones have become even more ubiquitous.

And ideally in a way that is easy for people without tech knowledge to understand. Many of my friends run away just seeing the word ā€œserverā€ without some clear , reassuring context.
As it is now, not only does a newbie have to do some digging to add people on other instances (and even that sometimes fails at the search level), but the mastodon site is unclear on how that person joins at all. It’s there, but not in the front page and not very clear.
@sctttnnnt if mastodon fails to become useful, but we all imitate Alvin’s piece in the process, we will at least know what a screen of resonant text frequencies…um… sounds like? Or something!
