Just discovered this poem. I like it. Despite its age it still speaks of how science works and is a progression from generation to generation.
THE OLD ASTRONOMER.
Sarah Williams - 1868
REACH me down my Tycho Brahé,—I would know him when we meet,
When I share my later science, sitting humbly at his feet;
He may know the law of all things, yet be ignorant of how
We are working to completion, working on from then till now.

I love this story about The Princess Bride… the small things are the big things

#Inconceivable During the first table read of "The Princess Bride," Wallace Shawn noticed that his character, Vizzini, had the word “Inconceivable!” scribbled plainly in the script, without any hint of how it should sound. The moment stayed vivid in his memory because he immediately felt that the delivery had to reflect Vizzini’s inflated ego and constant desperation to prove his superiority. Shawn later shared in interviews that he began experimenting right there at the table, trying (1/10)

So, a hypothetical situation for which I am soliciting feedback:

We are in some moderately populous city, for which there is - suddenly, unexpectedly - unreliable power and no network. Cellular, ISPs, those things stop. Power, it's maybe sporadic, DNS is gone.

There is some plausible critical mass of nerds who want to be useful, Lora mesh & let's go. We stand up a server.

What's on that server and why?

Big Tech: we invented the torment nexus

Glasses brands: for $54.95, you can slightly reduce the torment

Does anyone know any good books on "Mutual Aid Project Management" or "Mutual Aid Group Dynamics" or "Anarchic Group Dynamics" etc?

My feet are dipped in the water and I'm starting to swim around without touching the bottom of the pool and I'd like to learn more and skill up now that I have familiarity with the subject.

This also impacts the way I build new software these days.

Inspired by a few observations:

- the only 'legacy" code I'm ever confident will compile out of the box are single Makefile projects written in C

- Most of the time, I don't want to write in C, so I opt for go.

- I'm not as confident in go's future, but go compiler builds are static artifacts, and dependencies can be vendored and are not hosted in a single monolithic service - so I have reasonable expectations of maintainability.

It's important to protect our data online, and this is doubly true for anyone in the queer community.

But protecting our data shouldn't mean staying isolated.

It can be difficult to find a balance,
but it is fundamental to stay connected with our communities.

There are tools and practices that can help us with this.
