I feel and think much as you do, care about many of the things you care about, although most people don't care about them. You are not alone.
Bonus: there is a grove of oaks in Indiana called “constitution grove” which is maintained for the express purpose of supplying oak to keep that ship in commission

Project Orion was a project to design a spaceship powered by nuclear explosions. The ship would eject atomic bombs, which would detonate and impact on a blast shield mounted on shock absorbers, propelling the craft. Non-atomic prototypes were successfully tested, but the project was ultimately made infeasible by international nuclear test bans and concerns about fallout.
