Someone shouldn't have to maintain perfect email hygiene to keep a streaming service. That's their risk they're transferring onto me to save themselves infrastructure costs.
Email-as-identity is a security antipattern. Full stop.
Passkeys exist. They're phishing-resistant and device-bound. But that requires actual engineering investment instead of punting to email.
This is the same lazy logic as SMS 2FA. "It's convenient" is not the same as "it's secure." Convenience for whom? The company's support ticket queue, not you.
"Log in with your email" = "we made your email provider the gatekeeper of your account."
Lose Gmail access? Compromised? Phished? Congratulations, you've lost Spotify too! Chain of failure, by design.
Spotify just announced they're killing username login. Email-only after September 1st.
The industry keeps collapsing authentication into email as if that's progress. It's not. It's outsourcing your security to Gmail.
