@drewcassidy hey they're just the musical isomorphisms. the flat operator defines an isomorphism from the tangent bundle of a (pseudo-)Riemannian manifold to its cotangent bundle, and the flat operator the inverse isomorphism (from the cotangent bundle to the tangent bundle).
