I'm a Materials Scientist who works part time as an instructor and otherwise does consulting.

I like to help people with clever ideas for science or art build prototypes and installations. My science passion is materials, my art passion is the fascinating space where strobing lights interact with your visual cortex to make patterns.

Or just shining pretty lights on art that my friends and family make.

I guess Google wasn't getting enough users to willingly pay for hallucinating AI's to "help" with email.

Glad I already switched to FastMail, though I had hoped to be indefinitely lazy about breaking it off. I really don't want to spend the energy closing the account but so it goes I guess.

See, the thing is, even if I reinstall Windows from scratch bluetooth may still not work so it may still be impossible to practice voice control of Windows.

But it works if I run Ubuntu from a liveCD image.

It's amazing to me that there's no way to repair something like this in Windows short of a full reinstall that might not even help.

ah, now you simply create a blank workbook, then go to the data tab, then import CSV.

but it's totally worth it because now it formats it as a table (the formal kind with cell headers and formulas using column names).

:laughcry:

Every website that automatically does a calculation when you change numbers in a box (say, order quantity) should have a checkbox for "update immediately".

Digi-Key sitting here taking twenty seconds when I click on the quantity field for any item to recalculate the entire cart. Only 73 more to go...

Every version of Excel seems insistent on being shittier and shittier about opening CSV files.

Meanwhile, LibreOffice has just kept doing the same thing for the last twenty years and it still works perfectly.

I don't understand why it ignores the file extension and obvious file pattern and obvious text encoding in order to open each line in a separate row, all in the first column.

At least in older versions they let you say "open options" to manually force the importer to be used.

been trying to write a TL;DR about #PopeFrancis and his work and solidarity with trans women, especially sex workers, but there really isn’t much in English; so y’all have to deal with articles in Spanish.

so let’s get this clear: when he said the RCC only recognized two genders, he was being explicit about that historical fact. he wasn’t saying trans folks didn’t have a right to exist. on the contrary, his letters on how transfolks are welcomed as godmothers & godfathers are key… 🧵

The Dirod Machine - Extreme Electronics

I recently came across the book Electrostatics by A. D. More online which featured a modern (1975) electrostatic generator called the Dirod Machine. This is the same book that I got the idea for the folded shakesphere machine, that works in a similar way to the Dirod machine. The images in this book online were … Continue reading The Dirod Machine →

Looking for advice on refrigerators.

My coop has a chest freezer and a regular refrigerator with a freezer on top. We need fridge space much more than freezer space, plus the fridge is over 22 years old.

I want to get a full size fridge that has *no freezer* since we already have a chest.

Any recommendations? I can find examples, even on Amazon, but I don't want to need an app on my phone to use it, and it should be commercial grade most likely...
