I am Bersl. I am a nerdy raccoon of 40 years who lives in a messy dumpster while the world crumbles around.

I help maintain a big ole' pile of Perl (mostly) for a living. The rest of tech is leaving me in the dust. I'm kind of okay with that. Sometimes the muses are kind to me and let me write poetry. etiam aliquando Latine lego vel dico vel scribo. Poni poni poni poni poni.

Dear YouTube commenter:

Minor emergencies at shift change at night while being understaffed is not a "unique" event. Not even just in aviation.

Periodic reminder that you can install the "AI warning for Steam" addon on your browser so you don't have to scroll down to the bottom of a Steam page to check if a game has ai-generated slop content 🫡

Despite what ceos want you to believe, not all games have ai-gen, a lot of devs hates it

Fuck ai-gen

I've come to find that I get really irked when people express that everything should be open source.

The crazy part about this is that I actually agree with those people! At least, that literal sentence.

But it irks me because of the underlying attitude that a lot of diehard FOSS advocates have. The implication being that open source is ALL you need to make the world better. Which is complete nonsense.

Open source is important, but it's just one piece of the puzzle. Modern software has so many problems and you can't focus on just one problem.

I'm just going to say - don't give them the benefit of the doubt anymore.
Just ban GenAI entirely in your projects.
Do not underestimate what the players pushing these tools are trying to do in literally every single sphere of the tech space.
I pushed for less harsh policies in the past. All I can say is please, do not. It was a mistake. You cannot trust anyone who helps make these tools, do not - even for a second - underestimate the will power they have and will use to ruin. Please don't make the mistakes I made.
Just so we're clear: is 'Half Life' a valid pony name?
frame generation: an incredible technology that lets your GPU render 300 frames per second and all of them are wrong. now with snapchat filters!
