Undivided mixed-use paths are often dangerous to the most vulnerable users. By Code de la Route Art. 104, I have the right to assess this encumbrance and use the street instead, regardless of drivers' inconvenience. I do not waive my right to 1,5m safety distance by doing so.

The way the American built environment is designed to make drinking & driving almost always the path of least resistance is one of those quietly monstrous things you can’t unsee when you realize it. We require bars to build parking lots & act surprised when people die.

How can we still make the same mistakes today Esch did over a decade ago?! Leading cyclists right into a bus stop is not great but having the shelter right in the middle creating s bottleneck is worse

Our strategy is to hope that a fear of future consequences & some sternly worded PSAs cause the people taking the judgment impairing, inhibition lowering drug to not make the irresponsible choice that we’ve made by far the easiest, most convenient & often only option.

@[email protected] Thank you for making the point.

Yet another example where the US wastes money exorbitantly, refusing to do the right, practical & sustainable action.

Similar to many areas, $ is spent on tech promises & consultants to validate/legitimize... vs simple action that takes courage.

Today I met with officials in Helsinki, which has had a ~75% drop in road deaths over the last thirty years (including recent years with no ped/cyclist deaths at all).

Me: “How much of a role has IT played in reducing crashes?”

City official: “Zero. We simply slowed down cars.” https://twitter.com/Research_USDOT/status/1570823856507478025
