The fact that we have normalized falling asleep to true crime is slightly concerning when actually thinking about it, we take what is the worst day of someone's life and treat it like a bed time story. This just goes to show how desensitized to violence we have become #so339
I think it was really interesting that the podcast on true crime took note of the biological processes that draw us to true crime. This isn't really something that I had thought about, but it makes a lot of sense ! #so339
I would be curious of the impact that ai is having on the use of social media content as evidence because it has become far to easy to make it look like someone is doing something that they may have not truly done. I think this just also emphasizes the need for increased digital literacy. #so339
I think that if law enforcement is going to be using social media as evidence, they first need to address biases that they hold and would impact who they are investigating online. #so339
@corn_dawg I think this is a good question and definitely something I was thinking about throughout the reading. Though they did share a lot of information about themselves and even possibly incriminating evidence, I wonder if there were other details they left out or things that were just too bad to discuss. #so339
I think one of my biggest takeaways from the book is the performance that these young men put on social media in order to try to create new opportunities for themselves and escape poverty. This may appear as acts or threats of violence, but does not necessarily mean that they want a life of criminality. #so339
I found it interesting that Stuart mentions how even non-gang affiliated youth use the content of gang members to keep themselves safe. Though this offers them an opportunity to protect themselves, it is also really sad that they have to worry about their safety even if they are not associated with a gang. #so339
@doglover4 I definitely agree, the amount of privilege that he had really made it difficult to read their interactions. I couldn't imagine being Junior in this situation and seeing this privilege and then hearing Chad complain about his problems that are nowhere near what Junior has to face. #so339
I think Chad's shock about Junior being homeless really goes to show how little people know about gang life and the drill music industry. The boys rely on music and media to rise out of their current situation which many people fail to realize. #so339
I think the comparison between treatment of people like Kaitlin Bennet and CBE boys in regard to their social media content and display of guns was interesting. The boys are put on probation or sent to prison, while Bennet becomes an influencer. #so339
