@SuzanEraslan my touchstones for weird toronto weather are, for now:

1) the 86°F/30°C Thanksgiving we had here eleven years ago. roasting a chicken in a sweltering basement in effing October was An Experience.

2) the hazy 20°C January day we had about seven years ago.

i’m barely fazed by seasonal lag anymore. i’m pleasantly surprised when we actually experience middling-cool fall and spring temperatures for more than two weeks between death chill and roasty-toasty seasons.

@gcupc I’m cheek-to-jowl with a body of water that is highly likely to become a focus of conflict due to the effects of those droughts, leaving me with the prospect of wondering if we could escape north fast enough to outrun an invasion, or if we’ll just wake up one day to find “protective” military forces controlling the lakes, tarsands, and a substantial buffer of territory around and between them.
@gcupc aside from the desperate appeal to gonzo fuhrer’s destructive capacities, i’ve had many of the same thoughts in recent years, but mostly kept them to myself. the only things i can think of doing at this stage would be to learn how to cultivate a garden and survive off the land, defend marginalized people and those i love from the predations of wannabe rulers, and if i’m lucky to survive long enough help organize self-sufficient, mutually-supporting communities.
@tonnerre Possible, though I’m not sure they planned that far ahead at first. I think they merely expected him to sow social division and chaos after he narrowly lost to HRC, building up to a second run at the big chair. The bizarre upside-down victory was an unexpected bonus upon which they quickly capitalized.

@tonnerre it’s not as if so many people haven’t been issuing warnings about putin’s actions and cronies for over a decade now. i remember the apartment bombings, the anti-queer laws, the overreaction to pussy riot, the ban on protests larger than one person, the suppression of human rights groups by labelling them foreign agents, the open support of fascists like le pen, haider, golden dawn.

anyone who thinks concern about russia is recent and merely about trump hasn’t been paying attention.

@tonnerre it’s plausible, akin to the operation chaos shit they’ve been sowing across europe by making nice with fascists. putin and his gang have been playing with wet dynamite for years now, and it’s about to blow up in everyone’s faces. they may have literally helped the next hitler attain power while trying to fuck with rivals, assert dominance, and stomp on marginalized people.

nice legacy, vlad.

The sixth mass extinction is unfolding right now, a purely human-driven phenomenon involving the ravages of mass monoagriculture, the horrors of factory livestock farming, the wreckage left by mining and trawling, the mountains of mess left by disposable capitalist society, and the induced pressures of anthropogenic global warming. Even the fascists and plutocrats won’t be able to hide. https://www.cbc.ca/news/technology/living-plant-wwf-2018-1.4882819

it’s been quite something to see everyone in the US who couldn’t shut up about family, faith, and freedom from the early 1990s until two years ago line up to lick the boots of venal authoritarian nationalist grifters.

it’s also been quite something to watch venal authoritarian nationalist grifters openly collaborate across the very borders they intend to further reify and fortify.

@SallyStrange this is an awesome music trip. i was introduced to a lot of reggae and dancehall at my old job and came to like a lot of it.

never apologize for taking care of yourself.

@teslas_moustache the Liquor Control Board of Ontario, better known as the LCBO. There’s also the beer retailer known as The Beer Store, formerly Brewers’ Retail, operated by a consortium of beer manufacturers. For reasons that escape me, a private wine sales chain called the Wine Rack emerged in the past couple of decades.

The Wikipedia article on the Liquor Licence Act provides a decent synopsis of Ontario’s booze retail situation. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liquor_Licence_Act_%28Ontario%29
